Our Story

A Brief History

Wigan and Leigh Community Charity was founded in 2013 to save Platt Bridge Community Zone from closure and undertake a Community Asset Transfer. The organisation was founded as Abram Ward Community Co-operative and received funding from Wigan Council’s The Deal.

The organisation then undertook a vision to support Community Businesses across Abram Ward — Bamfurlong, Abram, Platt Bridge, Bickershaw and Spring View — via the creation of a Neighbourhood Plan Forum for Abram Ward. It also started to support Social Enterprises and Community Businesses within Abram Ward.

In 2017, the organisation was chosen as 1 of 6 across the Country to be on the Power to Change Empowering Places programme and received £1 million to help grow Community Businesses in Abram Ward.

In 2022, the organisation changed its name to Wigan and Leigh Community Charity and successfully undertook ownership of a 2nd community building in Hindley. WLCC then led the campaign for Wigan Borough to be a Social Enterprise Town via Social Enterprise UK, and delivered the Proper Good Wigan Borough Social Investment programme.
